Your Guide to the Beginner Hard Cap Wig Making Course

Over the course of two days, the Big Wigs Beginner Workshop teaches you all the skills you need to start creating hard cap wigs on your own.

It kicks off with an overview of hard cap theatrical, mannequin and drag wigs and then takes you step-by-step through making your first hard cap wig.

If this sounds like the perfect way to expand your penchant for wig-making, join us as we break down everything you need to know about our beginner workshop.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

The course is for anyone looking to make a hard cap wig from scratch.

You might have a background in soft cap wigs or maybe you’re simply interested in the hard cap wig technique – all you really need is your imagination to create wig magic.

The beginner workshop is also great for people who would like to learn the art of hard cap wig-making fast. Because this course is specifically designed to give you everything you need to make hard cap wigs in two days.

Under the careful guidance of expert wigmaker, Lauren Hobbs, you will come away from Big Wigs Workshop with the know-how and confidence to start building hard cap wigs on your own.

Plus, if there’s a skill you’d like to develop in the future, we can always put together a follow-up course based on your individual wig-making goals.

WHAT DO YOU LEARN?

After a brief introduction to the world of drag, mannequin and theatre hard cap wigs, the workshop jumps right into making the hard cap itself.

Beginning with the cap’s foundation and learning how to “hackle”, a method used to mix different hair colours, you will be taken step-by-step through layering your wig.

Once you have a solid foundation in place, you will learn and practice how to use the push-up technique to cover the entire cap. While it might take some time getting used to this technique and working with glue – that’s normal! – we promise to help get you in a natural rhythm.

This course aims to build your hard cap wig skills and boost your creative confidence.

Next up is styling, where we make your wig really come to life!

From middle and side parting your wig to giving your wig fringe or a ponytail, you will learn how to style your hard cap in any fashion you’d like. This includes modifying the front and back hairlines as you see fit.

The customisation of your wig has no limits.

During the workshop you will have ample time to practice using pins and glue on the hair so you can become comfortable with managing and handling the wig.

On top of shaping and styling your own hard cap wig, the course will provide best wig-making practices and expert tips on how to care for your wig so it can stay in excellent condition.

Lastly, but certainly not least, you will receive a detailed materials list for you to keep and take home. This is purchased separately from the course and can serve as a guide for any hard cap wig you create in the future, making it that much easier to start on the next one!

Perfect Your Hard Cap Wig Making Skills on the Intermediate Course

You've got the basics down - hackling and layering a few hard cap wigs - and are now ready to perfect your technique.

You might be interested in mastering a new hairstyle or making wigs out of different materials (foam, polystyrene spheres, netted buns); no goal is too high at the Big Wigs Workshop.

Taught over five days or up to two weeks (for more intensive training), the Intermediate Course is designed to develop your hard cap wig making skills.

Sound like the next step in your creative journey? We'd love to be a part of it.

Here's a closer look at the kind of hard cap experience and business advice you'll gain by joining the Intermediate

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

This course for wigmakers who have either completed the Beginner Course or have experience sculpting hard caps with hair and glue.

There's no set amount of practice you need to have had because each course is tailored to match your skill level. So if you feel like you've got hackling down but want to get better at layering, the workshop will provide all the tools and one-on-one guidance you need to perfect your layering technique.

What you would like to spend time on - and how much time - is up to you. All we need to design a bespoke itinerary is your wig-making wishes. The schedule, lasting from five days to two weeks, will then be organised to fit your needs.

WHAT DO YOU LEARN?

From sculpting big, full-bodied wigs to styling caps with fringe, ponytails and buns, the Intermediate Course covers a range of hard cap techniques and hairstyles.

One of the skills you will learn, for instance, is how to create a double hairline (front and back). This highly sought-after craft will give your wigs that flawless, professional look.

The workshop will be led by hard cap wig specialist and instructor, Lauren Hobbs. With years of experience designing theatrical, mannequin and drag wigs for clients, she will guide you step-by-step through not only the creation process, but also the business side of wig making.

That means you will come away from the course with the technical skillset and practical know-how to make hard cap wigs for your own clientele.

In addition to the above, here's a snapshot of what to expect:

On the creative side:

  • Refining the push-up technique

  • Styling short, long and cropped wigs

  • Hair sculpting with different materials

On the business side:

  • Writing a business plan

  • Working to a client brief

  • Networking and growing contacts

  • Advertising and promoting your skills

DOES IT COME WITH A MATERIALS LIST?

A detailed materials list will be given to all participants of the workshop.

It's purchased separately from the course and is yours to keep at the end of the class. Think of it as the ultimate cheat sheet for creating hard cap wigs - pure gold!

HOW DO YOU SIGN UP?

If an Intermediate Course is not already scheduled to come to your city, then the Big Wigs Workshop will travel to you.

All we need to put on a course is the location and time frame convenient for you (nowhere is too near or far). The materials and space will be provided unless you have a space of your own in mind (we are flexible).
